What is polymeric sand?

Polymeric sand is a blend of fine sand and water-activated polymer particles swept into the gaps between pavers during hardscape installation. When moisture from rain or watering activates the polymers, the material hardens and binds the pavers together, creating a solid, unified surface.

The primary advantages over standard sand are structural and practical. Hardened polymeric sand locks pavers tightly in place, preventing shifting and movement caused by foot traffic or settling. It also creates a barrier against weeds growing up through joints and blocks access for ants and other insects that might tunnel under the pavement. Regular sand offers none of these benefits, washing away with rain and allowing the problems polymeric sand prevents.

Installation requires proper technique: pavers must be dry, the sand swept thoroughly into all joints, and excess brushed away before any water contacts the material. Timing matters. Applied incorrectly or watered too soon, polymeric sand can cure unevenly or stain the pavers. For this reason, many property owners work with hardscaping professionals familiar with the product's specific requirements and local climate conditions.
